Our Founder

Bondy Ramesh: A Visionary for People with Disabilities
Born on September 11, 1956, in the south of Mauritius, Bondy Ramesh is a social worker and entrepreneur whose life's work has been dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities. In 1984, while visiting various regions in Mauritius, particularly the south, Ramesh and his friends observed a troubling reality: persons with disabilities were often confined to their homes, hidden away due to the stigma and shame felt by their families. These individuals were left without access to education or essential services.
Determined to bring about change, Ramesh and his friends began to group students with disabilities, organizing games and activities for them during their free time. This grassroots initiative gradually gained momentum, leading to the establishment of partnerships with different clubs and the opening of a Day Care Centre. What started as a small effort has since evolved into the Southern Handicapped Association (SHA), a hub providing a range of services for persons with disabilities.
Ramesh's vision and mission for creating an inclusive society have been the driving force behind SHA's success. His unwavering dedication, even in the face of significant challenges, has made a remarkable impact. For more than 20 years, Ramesh worked tirelessly without receiving a salary, driven by his passion for making a difference in the lives of persons with disabilities. Despite struggles to secure funding, his determination never wavered, and his positive outlook inspired those around him.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the disability sector, Ramesh was awarded by the President of the Republic of Mauritius in 2014 for his social work and lifelong commitment. This prestigious honor reflects the significant strides he has made in advocating for and improving the lives of persons with disabilities.
The Southern Handicapped Association owes much of its progress to the support of Bioculture Mauritius Limited (BCM). Founded in the same year as SHA, BCM has been a steadfast partner, providing vital assistance that has helped shape the organization into what it is today. The Director of SHA remains eternally grateful to BCM for their continuous support and motivation, which have been instrumental in the school's development.
Ramesh's journey has been supported by close friends and mentors who have played pivotal roles in his life. The late Guru Fakun and along with several others, have been sources of constant motivation and encouragement, helping to fuel his commitment to the cause.
Through his vision, resilience, and the collective effort of those who believed in his mission, Bondy Ramesh has created a lasting legacy in the field of special education in Mauritius. His story is a testament to the power of dedication and the impact one individual can have in bringing about societal change.
Message From Founder
The Southern Handicapped Association (SHA) was founded on the firm belief that every individual, regardless of ability, has the right to education, dignity, and inclusion in society. Our journey began with the vision of bringing meaningful change—ensuring that education is not a privilege, but a fundamental right accessible to all. With the help of parents, volunteers, and relatives, we founded the organization.
At SHA, we stand by the principles of free and quality education for children and young adults with disabilities. Our mission aligns with global commitments such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and other international frameworks that advocate for the empowerment and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Education is the key to breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a more inclusive world where everyone can thrive.
Our commitment extends beyond just providing education—we strive to offer holistic development, vocational training, and opportunities that enable our students to lead independent and dignified lives. Over the years, SHA has stood as a pillar of hope and transformation, and we remain dedicated to serving people with disabilities across Mauritius.
I am proud to share that SHA started as a small day care center with just 6 students. Today, we have grown to serve more than 100 students. This growth reflects the dedication, love, and support we receive from the community, as well as the tireless work of our team.
Throughout my journey, I have had the privilege of serving as an Elected Board Member of the National Council for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons for over 10 years. I was honored to receive the President Badge of Honour in 2014 by the President of the Republic of Mauritius for my contributions to the disability sector. I have also had the privilege of being an Elected Member of the Village Surinam Council, Former Chairman of Surinam Social Welfare Centre, Active Social Worker, Former Board Member of Inclusion Mauritius, and Former Member of Special Olympics Mauritius. These roles have allowed me to be a voice for individuals with disabilities and to drive change for a more inclusive society.
I am grateful to have received several awards in recognition of my work in the disability sector. These accolades reflect not only my personal journey but the collective effort of everyone who has supported and believed in our mission.
The name Southern Handicapped Association will always shine in the history of Mauritius, not just as an institution but as a movement that continues to uplift lives and create lasting impact. Together, let us build a society where inclusion is not an exception but the norm.
Thank you for your continued support.
